Become a Road Captain

Do you or someone you know want to become a Road Captain in our Chapter? If so below you can find the information you will need.
The “Road Captain” position is a Discretionary (Optional) Chapter Officer; it carries a great deal of responsibility. A “Road Captain’s” decorum should always be above reproach and reflect the highest standards of the Chapter, Sponsoring Dealership, and National H.O.G. ® Organization. “Road Captains” serve at the pleasure of the Chapter Director and the Sponsoring Dealer. “Road Captains” are appointed after completion of the application process; their appointment is not a “life time” appointment, they must be in good standing as outlined in these guidelines. They report directly to the Head Road Captain and are responsible to the Primary Officers.
Should a member of the Charleston H.O.G. ® Chapter #4774 have a desire to become a “Road Captain,” he/she must meet the following requirements:
- Have a strong desire to serve the Charleston, SC H.O.G. Chapter #4774 as a “Road Captain.”
- Possess a valid Driver’s License with a motorcycle endorsement (or trike endorsement if applicable).
- Be a member in good standing with the National H.O.G. ® Organization and this local Chapter.
- Submit a written request to become a “Road Captain”
- Provide proof of a clean driving record for the past three years and have no convictions for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) or Reckless Driving.
- Successfully interview with the following, in order listed:
- Two (2) Current Road Captains
- Head Road Captain
- Chapter Safety Officer
- Chapter Director
- Demonstrate on a Chapter road trip, the ability to plan and lead a group of four (4) or more riders using acceptable hand signals, good judgment, and safe group riding skills.
- Have ridden a motorcycle/trike for at least two (2) years and been an active member of the Charleston H.O.G. ® Chapter for at least one (1) year.
- Be willing to commit to additional training as directed by the Chapter’s Head Road Captain, Chapter Safety Officer, and/or Primary Officers.
Nothing replaces good common sense, judgment, experience, and training. As a “Road Captain” you will be expected to use all four (4) in the performance of your duties. One of your responsibilities will be to lead Chapter Members and Guests on Chapter sponsored rides. You may be the one actually leading the group, setting the pace, or in the middle, or at the end riding sweep, looking for stragglers or those who are having problems.
More information can be found in the "ROAD CAPTAIN CERTIFICATION GUIDELINES AND REQUIREMENTS, HARLEY OWNERS GROUP (H.O.G.) ® CHAPTER #4774, CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA, 12 December 2010." You can also discuss your desires with the Head Road Captain.
